Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross and follow me.
Human life has never been a bed of roses. Each of us carries pains, burdens, limitations and struggles. No human life is perfect. On the contrary, God’s life - the divine life is perfect, and free from all the difficulties we experience as humans. So, last Sunday, when Peter confessed that Jesus is “the Christ, the son of the living God”, it was natural for him to imagine that the son of God should be untouched by suffering. When Jesus therefore began to speak openly about His coming passion, Peter was scandalized. He rebuked Jesus, trying to protect Him from a path that seemed unworthy of the divine.
But Peter forgot that although Jesus is truly divine, He is also truly human; just as the letter to the Hebrews says: “He became like us in all things but sin”. (Heb. 2:17) The moment Jesus took on our human nature, He embraced also everything that comes with it – Hunger, fatigue, temptation, pain, and even death. These realities are not signs of punishment; they are simply part of being human. And Jesus entered fully into them. not to escape suffering, but to redeem it.
